WOW. Of all the choices in the world and people just say “said”.
Sometimes, I guess, authors just want to use something simple, so they end up using “said”.
But, I really do think that there are some good words on the list. “Vowed” and “chimed in” are for some reason, my favorite alternatives for said.

~~~~~~ and I agree with Katie…. that’s a great explanation for why they use ‘said’, but I still think most characters say things with a little more feeling when they talk… they probably don’t speak in a monotone the whole story.I think it’s fine to use it, just not really frequently. Using alternatives makes dialogue a lot more life-like
I agree with pretty much everything you said. “Said” is such a simple word, but if you use it too often, it just gets plain BORING. And you are correct- using the alternatives, without a doubt, make writing and dialogue more interesting.
